Best Things to Do in Queenstown (Local Guide)

Queenstown is one of those places that’s just easy to love.
You’ve got the mountains, the lake, the fresh air, and somehow everything feels calm and a little bit exciting at the same time.
If you’re visiting, here are a few things we genuinely think are worth doing. Nothing rushed, nothing overcomplicated, just good experiences.
Go up the gondola
The Skyline Queenstown Gondola is one of those things everyone talks about, and it really is worth it.
It only takes a few minutes to get up, but the view at the top is incredible. You can see the whole town, the lake, and the mountains all around you.
If you can, go later in the day. Sunset up there is something special.
Try jet boating
Even if you’re not super into adrenaline, this is worth doing.
Shotover Jet is probably the most well known, and it’s a really fun experience. Fast, a bit wild, and very Queenstown.
You might get a little wet, but that’s part of it.
Walk up Queenstown Hill
If you feel like moving a bit, this walk is a good one. It’s not super easy, but it’s also not extreme.
It takes a couple of hours return, and the view at the top makes it completely worth it. It’s one of those spots where you just stop for a second and take everything in.
Spend an afternoon in Gibbston Valley
About 20 minutes from town, you’ve got Gibbston Valley. Vineyards, open views, and a slower pace.
If you’re into wine or just want a long lunch, places like Amisfield Restaurant are really nice without feeling too formal.
It’s a good way to slow things down for a bit.
Drive out to Glenorchy
This is one of the best drives around here.
The road to Glenorchy follows the lake the whole way, and you’ll probably want to stop often for photos.
Take your time with it. That’s the best part.
Spend time by the lake
One of the nicest things you can do in Queenstown is not plan too much.
Walk along Lake Wakatipu, grab a coffee, sit by the water. Especially in the morning or late afternoon, it’s really peaceful.
Sometimes that ends up being the best part of the trip.
A small note from us
